Background to Ljubljana: One of Europe's best kept holiday secrets, Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, makes for a perfect tailor-made holiday. Serving as the country's economic, political and cultural centre it is the gateway to the Balkans. Straddled by a series of river and waterways, it is crossed by more than a dozen bridges, which include the famous Dragon, Triple and Cobbler Bridges. Due to Ljubljana's central position and excellent transport links, it makes for a great base to explore the wider region, including the famous Lake Bled and the Postojna Caves.

Background to Lake Bled:  Lake Bled and its surrounding area is a natural playground that offers a fairy-tale setting for walking and swimming. We strongly recommend you take a couple of hours to walk round the lake to appreciate it’s true beauty from every angle, which includes the surrounding mountains, cliff top castle, pine forests and of course the island. In the summer the lake water is warm and ideal for cooling off. Other ways you can enjoy the lake and its views include a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride that circles the lake or hiring a bicycle or kayak.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Lake Bled

Arrive at Ljubljana Airport, where a private transfer will meet you in arrivals and take you directly to your chosen Lake Bled Hotel. Settle in, relax and enjoy a meal at one of the many excellent nearby restaurants.

Day 2 - Lake Bled

Spend your day exploring the stunning lake. Be sure to visit the hill-top castle and take a boat ride to the island, home to the beautiful Church of Queen Mary.

Day 3 - Lake Bled: Day Trip Idea - Lake Bohinj

Slovenia’s largest lake, the tranquil Lake Bohinj is known for its its wide variety of opportunities for visitors looking to interact with its surrounding. Its enchanting forested mountains and alpine air make for wonderful walking and hiking routes, while the pristine water is ideal for water based activities such as swimming, kayaking and canoeing. For those yearning for an adrenaline kick, there’s canyoning and white water rafting available nearby too. You can easily get to Lake Bohinj by bus from Lake Bled.

Day 4 - Lake Bled: Day Trip Idea - Vintgar Gorge

This area of outstanding natural beauty will add an extra dimension to your holiday. Wooden walkways sit above the roaring clear river, home to a wide variety of fish, and pass by a number of beautiful waterfalls from steep cliff faces - photo opportunities galore!

Day 5 - Ljubljana

It's time to say goodbye to Lake Bled, as your private transfer will take you from your hotel to your chosen one in Ljubljana. The compact yet remarkable capital offers a quaint old town, hill-top castle and best of all a superb city atmosphere.

Day 6 - Ljubljana

Spend your day exploring the rest of Ljubljana's famous landmarks, including the Cathedral of St Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja), the fascinating Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) and the historic Town Hall. Ljubljana sits on the Ljubljanica River, which weaves its way through the city including around the famous castle. Get to know more of the city from a different perspective with a river cruise.

Day 7 - Ljubljana: Day Trip Idea - Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle

Postojna Caves is one of the largest karst cave networks in the world, dating back two million years. With an incredible series of passages, chambers and galleries, visitors are left in awe at the sheer beauty of the natural formations. Just a few miles from Postojna Caves stands the 700 year old Predjama Castle. Sitting within a 123 metre cliff it was once a hideout for a rebellious baron, the subject of a romantic legend and is now home to a fascinating collection of weapons and paintings from the 15th century.
