Fly from London and most main regional airports from the UK to Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Milan Bergamo (BGY). Flight time is typically 2 hours. Transfer to Como from Milan Malpensa airport takes around 45 minutes whilst from Milan Bergamo airport it takes roughly 1 hour 10 minutes.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Lake Como. During these seasons, you'll enjoy mild weather, fewer crowds, and stunning scenery. Spring offers blooming gardens and perfect hiking conditions, while autumn brings vibrant foliage and a peaceful atmosphere. Summer is peak season, with warm weather and a lively atmosphere, but it can be crowded and is more expensive. Winter, though quieter, offers a serene landscape with snow-capped mountains.

Getting around Lake Como is easiest by ferries and boats, which connect the main lakeside towns like Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio with the ferry network being well-developed, offering regular services. Hiring a car offers flexibility but does require navigating narrow, winding roads. Public buses are an affordable option, though less frequent. Walking and cycling are ideal for exploring smaller towns. Taxis and private transfers are available but can be expensive for longer trips. A mix of ferries and walking or driving is the best way to explore what Lake Como has to offer.

Bergamo: known for its beautiful architecture, medieval charm, and rich culture, Bergamo is located about 1.5 hours from Lake Como, depending on your mode of travel. The city of Bergamo has lots to offer including the Città Alta, a historic medieval old town perched on a hill, known for its cobbled streets, ancient walls, and stunning architecture which can be reached by funicular, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Venetian walls that surround Città Alta and offer great views and historical insight. Driving is the fastest option, taking around one and half hours from Lake Como (depending on where you start). The drive offers scenic views as you pass through Lombardy’s rolling hills and countryside but be aware of traffic, especially near urban areas. Trains from Como to Bergamo usually require a change in Monza or Milan, with a total travel time of around 1 hour 45 minutes. Although indirect, it’s a convenient option for travellers who prefer not to drive. Trains are frequent, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive.
