what to do

Lake Bohinj

Explore the charming towns: Solta has several picturesque towns and villages, including Maslinica, Stomorska, and Grohote. You can wander through their narrow streets, admire the traditional stone architecture, and enjoy the local cuisine at the taverns and restaurants.

hiking in Lake Bohinj

Hiker's Paradise: The chances are that you'll choose Lake Bohinj for its walking and hiking credentials. Bohinj is a starting point for many trails into the Julian Alps and suitable for all abilities, with the tourist office in Ribcev Laz offering a hiking guide. A ride up Mount Vogel on the cable car rewards you with spectacular views of the lake and valley below. Circular walks around the lake are equally rewarding (12km), or even half a circuit, starting at the lake's main focal point, Ribcev Laz, heading to Hotel Zlatorag on the west edge, and taking the bus back.

Savica Waterfall

Savica Waterfall: For those wanting to enjoy the fantastic scenery at a more gentile pace, a popular walking route is to the Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica). Open April to October, it is the source of Slovenia's longest river and can be found 4 km from Hotel Zlatorog in Ukanc. The 60m falls are a highly impressive sight, but remember to bring a waterproof as you may get a little wet from the spray! A small entrance fee is payable.

Activities in Lake Bohinj

Activities ahoy: Lake Bohinj and its surroundings have the perfect ingredients for being a natural playground for the active and adventurous. Canyoning, rafting, kayaking and canoeing are among the most popular water based activities. Horse riding at Mrcina Ranc in the idyllic village of Studor offers guided tours lasting between one hour and three days. Swimming in the crystal-clear lake is also very popular in the summer as well as at the Aqua Park Bohinj. Other activities around Lake Bohinj include fishing and high rope courses, walkways and giant swings at the Bohinj Adrenalin Park.

Day trip ideas

Ljubljana: One of Europe's best kept holiday secrets, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, makes for a perfect tailor-made holiday. Serving as the country's economic, political and cultural centre it is the gateway to the Balkans. Straddled by a series of rivers and waterways, it is crossed by more than a dozen bridges. Explore the old town, take a river cruise and visit the impressive hilltop Ljubljana Castle which has spectacular views of the Old Town and beyond the river to the city centre. Buses to Ljubljana depart regularly via Bled. For more information on Ljubljana click here.

Lake Bled: Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s star attractions. The placid emerald green lake, lone island where the stunning St Martin's Pilgrimage church stands and the cliff top castle all make Lake Bled an incredible picturesque location. Walk round the lake to get views from every perspective and visit the famous Vintgar Gorge where the raging river and stunning waterfalls can be explored from the wooden walkways. You can easily get to Lake Bled by bus from both Ukanc and Ribcev Laz (1 hour). For more information on Lake Bled click here.

Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle: Postojna Caves is one of the largest karst cave networks in the world, dating back two million years. With an incredible series of passages, chambers and galleries, visitors are left in awe at the sheer beauty of the natural formations. Just a few miles from Postojna Caves stands the 700 year old Predjama Castle. Sitting within a 123 metre cliff it was once a hideout for a rebellious baron, the subject of a romantic legend and is now home to a fascinating collection of weapons and paintings from the 15th century. Visiting by car is the best way to get here from Bohinj.

The Coast: Slovenia’s coast may be only 30 miles long but boy is it spectacular! Wedged between Italy and Croatia, the picturesque town of Piran is the main draw. A magnificent medieval town that sits on a peninsula, Piran invokes an air of wonder and surprise, notably for its Venetian flair and architecture. If travelling by car, we’d recommend you incorporate a trip to the Skocjan Caves on the way. Car is the best method of getting to Piran from Lake Bphinj (2 hours 15mins).
