Background to Ljubljana: One of Europe's best kept holiday secrets, Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, makes for a perfect tailor-made holiday. Serving as the country's economic, political and cultural centre it is the gateway to the Balkans. Straddled by a series of river and waterways, it is crossed by more than a dozen bridges, which include the famous Dragon, Triple and Cobbler Bridges. Due to Ljubljana's central position and excellent transport links, it makes for a great base to explore the wider region, including the famous Lake Bled and the Postojna Caves. Explore the city: In Ljubljana, all roads lead to Preseren Square (Presernov trg), so get your bearings there. One of Ljubljana's main landmarks and meeting points for the locals is the statue of Slovenia's national poet, France Preseren, standing in the square adjacent to the striking salmon-pink Franciscan Church. Head towards the aptly named Triple Bridge and spend time seeking out landmarks such as the Cathedral of St Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja), the fascinating Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) and the historic Town Hall.
Ljubljana Castle: The impressive castle in the heart of the city looms high above Ljubljana. This 16th century fortification, perched on the towering Castle Hill boasts immaculate whitewashed walls and silky manicured lawns and has, for centuries, guarded the city against ever-present dangers. A visit to the castle is an essential item on any Ljubljana holiday agenda, as is a trip up the Watchtower which houses the Virtual Museum and has spectacular views of the Old Town and beyond. The quickest and easiest means of reaching the castle is to take the funicular railway.
River Cruise: Ljubljana sits on the Ljubljanica River, which weaves its way through the city including around the famous castle. Get to know more of the city from a different perspective with a river cruise. Sit back and relax on board, then marvel at the stunning architecture the city is renowned for, cross under the famous bridges and take in all that Ljubljana has to offer. Lake Bled and Bohinj: Two of Slovenia’s best loved sites, these two lakes are a must for any traveller to Ljubljana. Lake Bled is the star attraction with its placid emerald green lake, its lone island where the stunning St Martin's Pilgrimage church stands and the cliff top castle. Lake Bohinj is ideal for those with a passion for all things outdoors. It’s great for walking and hiking and water based activities such as kayaking and white water rafting. Goriska Brda: This region is famous for its idyllic countryside of rolling hills, pretty villages, ancient traditions and leading vineyards. Goriska Brda sits on the Italian border and offers a very Tuscan feel. We recommend this tour as it allows you to take in the many highlights of this incredibly picturesque area, as well as visiting and tasting some of the superb wines the Goriska Brda region is so famous for.
Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle: Postojna Caves is one of the largest karst cave networks in the world, dating back two million years. With an incredible series of passages, chambers and galleries, visitors are left in awe at the sheer beauty of the natural formations. Just a few miles from Postojna Caves stands the 700 year old Predjama Castle. Sitting within a 123 metre cliff it was once a hideout for a rebellious baron, the subject of a romantic legend and is now home to a fascinating collection of weapons and paintings from the 15th century. Regular buses and trains depart from Ljubljana to Postojna.
The Coast: Slovenia’s coast may be only 30 miles long but boy is it spectacular! Wedged between Italy and Croatia, the picturesque town of Piran is the main draw. A magnificent medieval town that sits on a peninsula, Piran invokes an air of wonder and surprise, notably for its Venetian flair and architecture. If travelling by car, we’d recommend you incorporate a trip to the Skocjan Caves on the way. If you are travelling by bus, a direct service takes around two and a half hours to Piran.
