2021 & 2022 Madeira Holidays

The "Hawaii of Europe", the subtropical volcanic island of Madeira is the nature lover's paradise. Expect cloud-topping peaks, lush flora, walking trails aplenty, waterfalls, botanical gardens and of course friendly locals.

Set closer to Northern Africa than Portugal's mainland (and yes, nowhere near the Balkans), Madeira enjoys balmy summer days and mild winters. Temperatures rarely go below 16 or above 30 degrees, making it perfect for those wanting to get out and explore. The capital Funchal is home to numerous museums, garden, white cobbled streets, fantastic cuisine and its famous wine.

Best time to go to Madeira: the weather shouldn't have much of an impact in terms of planning your holiday to Madeira. Its all year round ambient temperatures of between 20-30 degrees make for a great holiday in all months. As with most destinations, the summer holidays can be a busier time on the island but only in Funchal and some southern areas. Christmas and New Year are also quite a busy time especially with the draw of the magnificent NYE firework spectuclar.

Tipping in Madeira: Like many places in Europe, Madeira hasn't got a strong tipping etiquette. Gratuities are not widely expected, but are very warmly received. The standard rate in restaurants, taxi, cafes is up to 10% however only if you feel the service has been of a high standard.

Drinking water in Slovenia: tap water in Madeira is of excellent quality and perfectly safe to drink. Although there's not much rain at sea level, high up in the mountains you're never far from a shower. As the water comes from underground springs in the mountains, water in Madeira is never in short supply.
