Things to do in Lake Bled

Lake Bled Castle: Perched on a steep cliff 100m above the lake is one of Lake Bled's star attractions, offering panoramic views of the stunning scenery. Built on two levels, the medieval fortification is a must-see item on your Lake Bled itinerary. The 11th century castle is enhanced by a Baroque wing housing the museum collection, a 16th century Gothic chapel, a print-works, wine cellar and Herbal Gallery. You can reach the castle by foot, following one of the three trails sign-posted “Grad”, from either the Castle Baths, behind Bledec Hostel or just north of the neo-Gothic Parish Church of St Martin.

Bled Island: In the middle of the enchanting lake on the tiny tear-shaped island stands the beautiful Baroque St. Martin's Pilgrimage Church. Reaching the island is half the fun on your Lake Bled Holiday. Take a gondola from one of the jetties located around the lake and disembark at the monumental 17th century staircase. The skilful gondoliers charge around 12 Euros per person return, and allow half an hour to explore the little island. Climb the 99 steps of the South Staircase to the foot of the belfry containing the ‘wishing bell’ which visitors can ring to make a special wish.

Exploring the Lake: Lake Bled and its surrounding area is a natural playground that offers a fairy-tale setting for walking and swimming. We strongly recommend you take a couple of hours to walk round the lake to appreciate it’s true beauty from every angle, which includes the surrounding mountains, cliff top castle, pine forests and of course the island. In the summer the lake water is warm and ideal for cooling off. Other ways you can enjoy the lake and its views, include a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride that circles the lake or hiring a bicycle or kayak.

Vintgar Gorge: This area of outstanding natural beauty will add an extra dimension to your holiday to Lake Bled. Wooden walkways sit above the roaring clear river, home to a wide variety of fish, and pass by a number of beautiful waterfalls from steep cliff faces - photo opportunities galore! The walk is around 20 minutes long and contains a number of steps, but take your time to enjoy this unique setting. You can reach Vintgar Gorge by bus or train (to Podhom), or walk from Bled (around an hour). A small entrance is payable on arrival.

Excursions from Lake Bled

Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle: Postojna Caves is one of the largest karst cave networks in the world, dating back two million years. An incredible series of passages, chambers and galleries, visitors are left in awe at the sheer beauty of the natural formations. Just a few miles from Postojna Caves stands the 700 year old Predjama Castle. Sitting within a 123 metre cliff it was once a hideout for a rebellious baron, the subject of a romantic legend and is now home to a fascinating collection of weapons and paintings from the 15th century. Car or as an excursion is the best way of getting here from Lake Bled.

Ljubljana: One of Europe's best kept holiday secrets, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia makes for a perfect tailor-made holiday. Serving as the country's economic, political and cultural centre it is the gateway to the Balkans. Straddled by a series of rivers and waterways, it is crossed by more than a dozen bridges. Explore the old town, take a river cruise and visit the impressive hilltop Ljubljana Castle which has spectacular views of the Old Town and beyond the river to the city centre. Buses to Ljubljana depart every hour. For more information on Ljubljana click here.

Lake Bohinj: Slovenia’s largest lake, the tranquil Lake Bohinj is known for its its wide variety of opportunities for visitors looking to interact with its surrounding. Its enchanting forested mountains and alpine air make for wonderful walking and hiking routes, while the pristine water is ideal for water based activities such as swimming, kayaking and canoeing. For those yearning for an adrenaline kick, there’s canyoning and white water rafting available nearby too. You can easily get to Lake Bohinj by bus from Lake Bled. For more information on Lake Bohinj click here.

The Coast: Slovenia’s coast may be only 30 miles long but boy is it spectacular! Wedged between Italy and Croatia, the picturesque town of Piran is the main draw. A magnificent medieval town that sits on a peninsula, Piran invokes an air of wonder and surprise, notably for its Venetian flair and architecture. If travelling by car, we’d recommend you incorporate a trip to the Skocjan Caves on the way. Car is the best method of getting to Piran from Lake Bled (2 hours). You can also visit as part of an excursion. For more information on Piran, head to this website.
