Things to do in Dubrovnik

Explore the Old Town: Dubbed 'Paradise on earth' by George Bernard Shaw, the magnificent Dubrovnik will leave you speechless, for its beauty, setting and ambience is truly extraordinary. Dubrovnik's astonishing old town, surrounded by a 3 km ring of defensive walls is the heart of the city. Containing 15 forts, churches by the dozen, numerous museums and galleries, monasteries, a cathedral and a palace, there is no doubt why UNESCO granted Dubrovnik its World Heritage status.

Walk the City Walls: Soak up the superb views of the Old Town and harbour by walking the 'full circuit' of the ancient walls. Adult entrance costs around 100 kn and is the highlight for many people. If visiting in the peak of summer we recommend starting early in the morning or just before sunset as it can be rather demanding. One more tip, don't forget the camera! Afterwards, enjoy an evening stroll along the meandering streets and cobbled alleyways and take a lingering look at the restaurant menus. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to that most important decision of the day!

Dubrovnik Cable Car: Located at the foot of Mount Srd, Dubrovnik's cable car gives a breath-taking view of the city as the 4 minute ride whisks you up a spectacular 405m. After walking Dubrovnik's walls you may think the view could not get much better. You'd be wrong. At the summit, the sheer beauty of the city is captivated. The shimmering Adriatic and neighbouring islands provide the perfect backdrop to terra cotta rooftops, Baroque architecture and the glistening stone streets. Return adult tickets cost around 100 kn.

Beaches and Swimming: Dubrovnik offers a range of beaches both in the centre and further out. Banje Beach just outside the City Walls is Dubrovnik's most popular, where deck chairs & parasols are available to rent. Located a mile from Dubrovnik's Old Town is Sv. Jakov (St James') Beach. Accessible via foot or the No. 5 bus, this lovely pebble beach offers beautiful views of the city and of Lokrum Island. For those holiday-makers staying in and around the Lapad area of Dubrovnik, Copacabana Beach is suitable for children as it has shallow waters.

Excursions from Dubrovnik

Elaphiti Islands (Lopud, Sipan & Kolocep): These delightful islands between 20 minutes and an hour from Dubrovnik offers a great island hopping day trip. If a sandy beach is what you’re after, head for Sunj Beach on Lopud Island where a wide horse-shoe bay awaits. Sipan island is a tranquil haven and great for walking and exploring. Kolocep is the closest island and offers pretty beach coves and pine covered hills. Ferries from Dubrovnik Gruz port head to these islands up to 5 times in the summer and only costs around £2.50 each way. More info on Lopud and Sipan can be found here.

Mljet National Park: A highly recommended day trip from Dubrovnik, this large area includes two azure salt lakes, surrounded by pine forest. It’s a great place to explore by foot, bicycle and kayak. The waters are also very warm and clear, so having a dip is also highly recommended. To get here there’s a daily catamaran that leaves Dubrovnik’s Gruz port every morning between June and September and leaves again in late afternoon, making Mljet an ideal day trip. Outside these months we recommend visiting using an organised excursion. Entrance fee is payable on arrival.

Cavtat: A great place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Dubrovnik, Cavtat offers visitors fantastic seafront restaurants and cafes, pine forests and calm waters. Only a twenty minute bus from Dubrovnik’s bus station and Old Town or a 1 hour passenger ferry from the Old Town ferry port, it’s a great place for an afternoon away. For more information of Cavtat click here.

Kotor (Montenegro): Only a couple of hours from Dubrovnik in neighbouring Montenegro is the magnificent city of Kotor. A walled wonder, sitting on a glacial bay, surrounded by mountains, Kotor is something of an undiscovered marvel for us Brits. Get lost exploring the maze of cobbled streets that lead to a selection of palaces, museums and squares. You’ll have to either visit Kotor by car or on an organised excursion as there’s no adequate public transport for a day trip. More information on Kotor can be found here.
